In collaboration with Shawn Noren at UC Santa Cruz, we are investigating how the fiber-type profiles and oxidative activities of the locomotor muscles of these fully aquatic marine mammals change during their postnatal development.
We are studying the abilities of the fibers making up the locomotor muscles of bearded, ringed, and spotted seals to produce the ATP needed for contraction through oxidative processes.
We have determined the percentages and sizes of the fast- and slow-twitch fibers in the locomotor muscles of three species of Arctic seals (bearded, ringed, and spotted).
